Request for New Port Statistical Area from Ohio Department of Transportation Gets Preliminary Approval by Army Corps of Engineers

NASHVILLE, February 1, 2021 – Ron Coles of WRCA announced that the Mid-Ohio Valley Port District (MOVPD) proposed by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has been granted preliminary approval by the Institute for Water Resources and will be added to the Waterborne Commerce Statistical Center (WCSC) Database. It is now completing the process of formal approval by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The designation of a new statistical port district ensures accurate collecting and reporting of waterborne commerce data along the specified corridor of the Ohio River as compiled by WCSC.

WRCA contracted with ODOT to provide supportive data and materials, organize public meetings and guide the process in the request for designation of the new statistical port district.

MOVPD is defined as the 16 counties bordering the Ohio River in Ohio and West Virginia from Ohio River Mile 40.0 to ORM 256.8, between the Huntington Tri-State Port District and the Pittsburgh Port District. In 2018 these counties shipped 48 million tons of waterborne commerce. The new port district statistical area designation will encompass 70 barge terminals in Ohio and 53 barge terminals in West Virginia.

Federal recognition as a port region raises awareness and supports marketing and economic development efforts nationally and globally.
